Oltre ad essere la distribuzione più diffusa, col tempo Ubuntu è diventata anche la base di numerose altre distro Linux. Di queste, sono relativamente poche quelle che riescono a raggiungere un successo quanto meno discreto tra gli utenti, e una di queste è certamente Linux Mint: elegante e mirata ad essere user-friendly, è riuscita a riscuotere in breve tempo notevoli consensi nella comunità Open Source, anche se in diversi casi è stata criticata per la presenza al suo interno di codec multimediali non propriamente affini allo spirito che anima il mondo Linux.
Basata sull’ambiente desktop GNOME, ma disponibile anche nella versione KDE, si contraddistingue per il suo stile sobrio e pulito, e per l’avere un menù differente rispetto ad altre distribuzioni che utilizzano lo stesso desktop, e che prende il nome di MintMenu. L’ultima release disponibilie è la versione 5.0, dal nome in codice Elyssa, rilasciata agli inizi dello scorso mese di Giugno dopo 7 mesi di sviluppo.
Un’altra delle peculiarità di Mint è la presenza di diversi strumenti messi a disposizione dal team di sviluppo per semplificare alcuni processi agli utenti meno esperti: tra questi, spiccano l’installatore di pacchetti aggiuntivi MintInstall, il tool per la gestione del desktop MintDesktop, MintConfig per la configurazione dei principali aspetti della distribuzione e MintUpgrade per l’aggiornamento della stessa.
I servizi offerti dagli sviluppatori per avere maggiori informazioni su Linux Mint sono tanti: si va dal forum ufficiale, grazie al quale è possibile scambiare informazioni e consigli con tanti altri utenti Mint, ad un Wiki molto completo, da una newsletter grazie alla quale è possibile segure il processo di sviluppo della distribuzione ad un planet nel quale vengono raccolti i post provenienti dai principali blog mondiali dedicati a Mint.

ottima distribuzione mint… e poi i discorsi dell’etica linuxiana sono chiacchiere da bar… l’importante è creare qualcosa di semplice ed alternativo che possa essere usato da tutti, ubuntu e mint riescono in questo
