Annunciato Ubuntu 10.4 Ma Non Solo
Gli sviluppatori di Canonical stanno dando gli ultimi ritocchi ad Ubuntu 9.10 che dovrebbe essere disponibile a partire dal prossimo mese, ma già si inizia a guardare avanti, alla prossima release del più popolare sistema operativo desktop basato su Linux, ovvero Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx che dovrebbe quindi vedere la luce nel mese di aprile del prossimo anno.
Le release di Ubuntu si basano si di un calendario semestrale, il che significa che ogni aprile/ottobre è necessario eseguire l’aggiornamento. Esistono poi delle versioni, come la Lucid Lynx, etichettate come LTS o Long Tim Service, pensate per tutti coloro che non vogliono star dietro ai nuovi update, aggiornando soltanto ogni due anni il so.
Per il momento non ci sono dettagli in merito alle features di questa nuova versione, si sa soltanto che in un primo momento verrà utilizzato GNOME 2.0 che però in seguito verrà abbandonato per la più recente versione 3.0. Ci sarà un grosso passo in avanti per le funzioni di cloud computing. Anche se ci si attendono ulteriori info soltanto nei prossimi mesi.
In occasione di questo annuncio, è stata fatta chiarezza anche sullo strano modo di denominare le varie release, Hardy Heron, Dapper Drake, Breezy Badger, non sono nomi che ci si aspetta vengano dati ad un sistema operativo. Mark Shuttleworth, ha spiegato che questo sistema di denominazione ha avuto un origine casuale:
“It came about as a joke on a ferry between Circular Quay and somewhere else, in Sydney, Australia:
* lifeless: how long before we make a first release?
* sabdfl: it would need to be punchy. six months max.
* lifeless: six months! thats not a lot of time for polish.
* sabdfl: so we’ll have to nickname it the warty warthog release.
And voila, the name stuck. The first mailing list for the Ubuntu team was called “warthogs”, and we used to hang out on #warthogs on irc.freenode.net. For subsequent releases we wanted to stick with the “hog” names, so we had Hoary Hedgehog, and Grumpy Groundhog. But “Grumpy” just didn’t sound right, for a release that was looking really good, and had fantastic community participation. So we looked around and came up with “Breezy Badger”… For those of you who think the chosen names could be improved, you might be relieved to know that the “Breezy Badger” was originally going to be the “Bendy Badger” (I still think that rocked). There were others… For all of our sanity we are going to try to keep these names alphabetical after Breezy. We might skip a few letters, and we’ll have to wrap eventually. But the naming convention is here for a while longer, at least. The possibilities are endless. Gregarious Gnu? Antsy Aardvark? Phlegmatic Pheasant? You send ’em, we’ll consider ’em.”
