Recentemente è stata rilasciata Prowl, un nuovo cittadino dell’appstore di iTunes al costo di 2,39€, che si occuperà finalmente di traslare Growl su iPhone. Growl è un servizio di notifiche molto popolare fra gli utenti Mac, non molto tempo fa rilsaciato anche in versione Windows; la sua caratteristica principale è quella di essere compatibile pressapoco con qualunque applicazione installerete e poter dunque fungere da Grand Central delle notifiche.
Prowl si comporta diversamente. Anziché comunicare con le applicazioni sul vostro iPhone e centralizzarne le notifiche, comunica con Growl sul vostro Mac, tutte le notifiche che Growl mostra sul costro Mac vengono immediatamente mostrate sul vostro iPhone sfruttando il Push Notification Service. E’ possibile impostare una serie di filtri e comportamenti delle due applicazioni così da rendere la ostra esperienza più personalizzabile.
Prowl vi chiederà di registrare un account. Il sistema di centralizzazione dell’informazione e lo sfruttamento del Push Notification Service aprono la strada a sviluppi interessanti. Già in questa versione Prowl si allontana da Growl in alcuni dei suoi aspetti mentre ne evolve un altro. Infatti se da un lato Prowl aggiunge la possibilità di inviare appunti testuali al proprio Mac in quel momento acceso, dall’altro grazie all’account che abbiamo creato Prowl registrerà fino a 30 giorni di notifiche, consentendoci la consultazione di un lifestream tutto personale.
Particolarmente interessante è l’enfasi posta sulle API dagli sviluppatori, attraverso le quali chiunque può integrare Prowl in qualunque applicazione sia in grado di accedere ad internet. Una funzione fondamentale che spero di vedere presto è la centralizzazione delle sessioni. In parole povere come i Push Notification Servers ci tengono online, così potrebbero esistere dei Session Notification Servers, in grado di tenere on-line la maggior parte degli account, social network, communities etc. In questo modo il nostro Mac sarebbe libero di essere spento e noi necessiteremmo di una sola applicazione che acceda al Push Notification Framework, il che pare possa essere utile date le prestazioni sotto la media che molti lamentano riferendosi con iPhone 3GS.
