Ormai dovreste saperlo bene. Dalla versione 3.5, Firefox utilizza un database SQLite per conservare tutti i dati relativi a cookie, segnalibri e feed RSS. Con l’andar del tempo, questo database si frammenta ed influisce negativamente sulle prestazioni del browser, rallentandone l’avvio e il funzionamento generale.
Vacuum Places Improved è un’estensione, evoluzione di quel Vacuum Places che vi presentammo qualche tempo fa, capace di deframmentare/comprimere questo database e migliorare sensibilmente le prestazioni del navigatore targato Mozilla. In via del tutto automatica.
Una volta installato, Vacuum Places Improved si posiziona nella barra di stato di Firefox. Per avviare una deframmentazione del database al volo, basta cliccare sulla sua icona, mentre selezionando quest’ultima con il pulsante destro del mouse e scegliendo la voce “Impostazioni” dal menu contestuale, è possibile accedere al pannello di controllo dell’estensione.
La schermata delle opzioni dell’add-on, che vedete immortalata nello screenshot qui sopra, è completamente in italiano e permette, sostanzialmente, di fare due cose: impostare la deframmentazione automatica del database dopo un numero di avvii del browser regolabile (di default sono 50, ma se fate un utilizzo intensivo del software, forse è meglio abbassarle a 30-35) e nascondere l’icona di Vacuum Places Improved in modo che compaia solo quando necessario, ossia dopo un determinato numero di avvii di Firefox (30, di default).
I risultati ottenuti attraverso l’utilizzo di quest’estensione, specie quando la si usa per la prima volta, sono davvero ottimi: l’avvio del programma si velocizza sensibilmente, i risultati della awesome bar vengono forniti in maniera pressoché istantanea (anziché dopo 2-3 secondi, come può capitare quando il database è oltremodo frammentato) e la navigazione risulta molto più fluida.
Se non ci credete, correte a scaricare l’estensione dalla sua pagina principale, installatela nel vostro fido Firefox e, dopo aver avviato la vostra prima deframmentazione del database, ci dite.

Questa estensione è diversa dall'applicazione speedyfox.
Il risultato è decisamente ottimo! Si vede ad occhio come migliora il caricamento, che diventa quasi istantaneo, del nostro amato browser.

Anzi ccleaner adesso ha integrato oltre la pulizia anche la funzionalità per compattare il database di firefox.
